Cambodja (English)

11 maart 2016 - Stung Treng, Cambodja

Cambodia
I didn't expect to see so much of Cambodia as I did. We crossed the border Vietnam - Cambodia at Hatien. It was easy to cross the border with the motorbike and we're heading to Otres Beach near Sinahoukville. Allthough it is just across the border, it looked very different. Lots of acres, cows and wide views. Unfortunately we missed a speed bumb, luckely we didn't crash but the entire back tire had to be replaced. After fixing it, we could continue to Otres Beach. It was such a nice place that we almost stayed a week.
It was time to say goodbye to the beach and ocean to go to the Killingfields close to Phnom Penh. We didn't want to drive and sleep in Phnom Penh so we found a hotel close to the Killingfields. As we walked down the stairs to get some dinner, we found out that the hotel was a night club with lots of Asian women (hookers? ). Luckely we only stayed for 1 night. The next morning we went to the killingfields. Very impressive to learn and see the history of Cambodia.
Time to move on: next stop is Aoral District. Fun ride, and we arrive in a small Village. We really wanted to do some trekking over there, at the Aoral Wildlife Sanctuary, so we decided to drive to the entrance. Bad decision, the road was full of holes and deep loose sand. It took us a while and we weren't even halfway. There were a lot of people on big trucks transporting logs from the forest, looking at us but they didn't tell us that there was probably nothing at the end of the road. We decide to go back and look for a place to sleep. We didn't find a place to sleep in this small village so we went back on to the road. As we make a stop to drink something, we met a guy who spoke English and told us to go to a palmsugar factory, there is a guesthouse we could sleep. We found the guesthouse and we spoke to the owner. This area with all the buildings was a Khmer military base during the Khmer rouge. We learnt a lot about the history of Cambodia this day. The owner of the guesthouse knows a guy who does trekkings at the sanctuary but we decide to go the next day, to Krakor. The road to Krakor was very nice, and again very different; lots of green ricefields, and sandy roads. As we arrive at Krakor we found ourselves another guesthouse. The next day we visit the floating village. Was really great to see how people live on the water. After the visit we set our way to Battambang. A boring High way road. We stayed two nights at Battambang. We booked a tour with Samol and his tuktuk Wendy. He showed us Battambang and the area around it; temples, wine tasting, batcave and the bamboo railroad. We had a great day!
Next day; next stop: Siem Reap. Again a different scenery during the trip. We stay at the Pool Party hostel with swimmingpool, nice! I visit Angkor Wat, Bayon and Thom Temple. Wauw, what a beautiful place! Very impressive.
The plan was to go the next day, but the motorbike was at the mechanics to check it and it took longer then expected, so we stayed another night. Because of our last night, the owner of the hostel prepared a special dinner for us: red ants with chicken, duck with duck blood and ricewine. It sounds and looks weird but it was very tasteful.
The motorbike was good to go again and we went to Preah Vihear. There we visited a temple called Koh Ker. Very impressive, with lots of small temples close by. Now it was my time to ride the motorbike! That was scary at first but very great to manage to ride it!
Another day, another destination: Stung Treng near the Mekong river. We really wanted to do a tour to see the dolphins and the waterfall but it was too expensive. We decide to go by ourselves. We head to O'svay village. As we arrived at the river we met Kina Neang Ape, a tourguide over there. We told her what we wanted to do and after a short talk we were stepping into the boat to see the dolphins (only 7 females left) and the waterfall (wow!). We wanted to stay on a island, but there is no homestay or anything, but e can camp there. Yeah, why not? Kina and her father came with us to 'our' island and set up our sleeping place: a roof and a mosquitonet. Some 'carpets' on the floor and that's it. We have a bqq on the island and then we are alone (with lots of spiders, bugs, music and beer). When we wanted to go to sleep there was a big spider in the mosquito net. We managed to get it out but it wanted to go back to the tent, so it has to be killed. When we killed it, hundreds of little spiders came out, ieuw! We had a good night, no spiders (that we know off). We spent the day with Kina and we went to the local school where we met a Japanese delegation of students. They build the school and visit the school two times a year. We invited them to go to 'our' island to swim. It was a great afternoon and we don't want to leave this place just yet. So we decide to stay another night at the island. What a great experience!
It was great to drive though Cambodia. Lots of children waving, lots of places where they can't talk English, street food the kind you don't know what you are eating.
Next stop: Laos, back on my own again. Thank you Ocram Seyer for a great time, a great way to travel through Cambodia. I'm gonna miss you. Hopefully you learnt from my navigation skills ;-). Safe travels!
